In short

The Quiet Cabinet keeps your game on your phone. It doesn't ask who you are and it doesn't track you. There are no ads, no accounts, no analytics and no crash reporting. The one thing that leaves your phone is your purchase history in this game, checked by RevenueCat under a random ID so that what you buy unlocks and can be restored (see Purchases below).

What the game keeps on your phone

To remember your place, the game saves a few small files in its own space on your phone:

What Why
Your progress: the plate you're on and the moves you've made, the rare forms you've found, the rearing box and when its caterpillar arrived, the treasures you've earned (with the day each came), and the moths you've seen in the evening So the game opens where you left it, and the rearing box can grow over real days
Your collection: the butterflies you've found, when and where, and which Field Guide pages you haven't opened yet For the Field Guide
The Daily Specimen: which days you've finished, and the day in progress For the archive of past days
Your music: the pieces your plates composed, stored as a few numbers each, not recordings For the Listening Room
Your settings: volumes, haptics, breathing, reduce motion, evening light and the evening reminder So the game feels the way you set it
What you own: the collections or membership you've bought, as the store last confirmed them So they open even without a connection
A few notes the game has already shown you So it shows each one only once

Some choices in the game are made by a random number stored with your progress (for example, which rare forms turn up). It is used only on your phone and identifies no one.

The game also reads your phone's clock, date and time zone to pace the Daily Specimen, the rearing box and the evening light, and its language, to show its words in it. It never asks for your location; "after sunset" is worked out from the month and the time on your phone.

Widgets

If you add the game's widgets to your home screen, the game writes a small summary for them (the Daily Specimen and your latest find, with their pictures) into a space on your phone that only the game and its widgets can read. It never leaves your phone.

The evening reminder

The reminder is off unless you turn it on. If you do, the game asks your phone for permission to show notifications, and your phone shows one quiet reminder a day at the time you choose. It is scheduled on your phone: nothing is sent to us or anyone else. You can turn it off at any time in the game's settings or your phone's.

What leaves your phone

Only your purchase history in this game, as described under Purchases. The game makes no other internet connections. We (the developer) never receive your progress, your settings or anything else about you.

Purchases

Purchases are made through the App Store or Google Play; we never see your card or payment details. To know what you've bought, and to restore it on a new phone, the game uses RevenueCat, a service that checks purchases for us. RevenueCat receives:

  • your purchase history in this game (what was bought, when, and at what price), from Apple or Google;
  • a random ID made by the game, so your purchases can be matched to your phone. It is not your name, email or Apple / Google account.

We use this only to unlock what you've bought and to understand, in total, how the game's offers are doing (for example, how many people choose the Butterfly Collection). It is never used for advertising and never sold. RevenueCat processes it on our behalf under its own privacy policy and a data processing agreement.

Keeping and deleting it: your purchase record is kept for as long as the game is offered, so that "Restore purchases" can bring back what you've bought. To ask for it to be deleted, email thequietcabinetsupport@gmail.com with the order ID of a purchase, from your App Store or Google Play purchase history; we find your record by it and delete it. Deleting it doesn't take away what you've bought: the store keeps its own record, and "Restore purchases" brings it back.

Your phone's own backups. If you back up your phone (for example with iCloud or Google's device backup), these files may be included, as with most apps. Those backups are kept by Apple or Google under your account and their privacy policies. We can't see them.

The app stores. When you download the game or buy something, Apple or Google handle it under their own privacy policies. They may share summary figures with developers (such as download counts, or crash reports from people who chose to share them with developers). These never include your saved game.

Permissions

The game asks for one permission, and only if you turn on the evening reminder: to show notifications. It never asks for your location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone. (On Android, the store page may list technical permissions that are granted without asking, such as vibration for the gentle haptics.)

Children

The game is calm and suitable for all ages. It doesn't ask anyone for personal information, including children; the only record kept off the phone is the anonymous purchase history described above.

Deleting your data

Everything the game keeps is on your phone, so you're in control of it. Deleting the game deletes its files. Copies in your phone's backups follow your backup settings. The only record held elsewhere is your purchase history with RevenueCat, which we delete when you ask (see Purchases).

This website

This website sets no cookies and uses no analytics, ads or tracking. Its fonts and pictures are served from the site itself, so visiting it sends nothing to anyone else. It is hosted by Vercel, which, like any web host, keeps standard records of requests (such as the address your browser connects from and the type of browser) for a short time, to run the site and keep it safe, under its own privacy policy. We don't use those records to identify anyone. The App Store link takes you to Apple's own page, under Apple's privacy policy.

Changes to this policy

If the game ever changes what it does with information, this page will change first, with a new date at the top. If a change means anything leaves your phone, the game will say so in plain words before it happens, and ask where the law or the stores require it.
